Shea McCreery is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, and a Certified Clinical Anxiety Treatment Professional.

Growing up in Wadsworth, Ohio, Shea became interested in Psychology at an early age after a traumatic event in the community.

Shea’s brother was hit by a truck and required a lobotomy due to severe brain damage. At age 14, Shea found the medical documentation from his procedure and became fascinated with the brain.

During her teenage years, she started reading her mother’s old Psychology textbooks and knew her curiosity could not be quieted.

After learning how big of an impact relationships and family have on mental health, Shea knew that Marriage and Family Therapy/Counseling was the route she was destined to take. She also took extra training to become a Certified Anxiety Treatment Professional after discovering the staggering amount of people who are affected by anxiety disorders.

Serenity Family and Individual Counseling, LLC was born in Wadsworth, Ohio in 2019.

    Shea’s Advice on Hardship

Hundreds of thousands of people suffer from depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses every year. Thousands more battle with addiction and other debilitating physical conditions throughout their lives.

For many, these conditions can lead to a lack of hope or a dark place. If you or someone you know is going through a hard time, Shea’s advice is to always seek help. “Please know that you do not have to struggle through it alone”, Shea says, “there are people out there who want to be thee for you and accompany you through your struggles”.

    A Look at Loneliness

Loneliness, believe it or not, is another condition that thousands of people actually suffer from throughout their lives. According to Shea, “Research has shown that loneliness is more dangerous than smoking and obesity”.

A recent survey, conducted by the health insurer Cigna, found that nearly half of Americans feel alone, isolated, or left out at least some of the time.

Shea explains, “Loneliness was found to be one of the top indicators of living a shorter life. In my studies of trauma, I learned that feeling alone during a traumatic event causes a person to have more symptoms of trauma compared to those who felt supported while experiencing a traumatic event. Sadly, I have to note that feeling alone can occur even when one is surrounded by people. It is the sense of connection that defeats the feeling of loneliness.
