In 2005, the mental health system in Stark County, Ohio was in the midst of great turmoil. It was then that Lisa Grubbs stepped forward with the vision of creating a new agency that would enable individuals with mental health needs to achieve their recovery goals. The name, “Phoenix Rising”, was chosen to signify Grubbs’ dream of seeing a new agency “rise like a Phoenix from the ashes” to overcome the challenges in the community.

Their mission statement, “to empower and strengthen individuals and families in their growth and recovery”, aligns with their values of providing a safe and nurturing environment, opening doors to the community to provide awareness and education, and help improve the quality of their patients’ lives.

Currently staffed with over 100 psychiatrists, advanced nurse practitioners, counselors, and case managers, the Phoenix staff works together to provide comprehensive mental health care- working with individuals experiencing everything from substance abuse to trauma-informed care and persistent mental illness.

    April Tucker, Case Manager

Growing up in Canton and Massillon, April Tucker discovered her passion for people. She graduated from Washington High School and continued on to graduate from The University of Akron with a Bachelor of Science in Education.

Pursuing a career in the mental health field seemed like a good fit from the beginning. “I wanted to take the passion and love I have for individuals and implement that into my work”, April explained. “My purpose, my goal in life is to improve the quality of life for individuals- whether that’s finding housing for them, being their advocate, or linking them to the necessary resources to help make their lives a little more stress-free.”

Working as a Case Manager for Phoenix Rising has given April the opportunity to combine her passions and help her clients live more fulfilling lives. April expressed that the most rewarding part of her job is seeing the excitement on her client’s faces when they’ve accomplished their goals. “Being a part of their happiness and the process of the client accomplishing their goals reminds me how blessed I am to have such a rewarding job”.

    Terry Smith, Chief Clinical Officer

Terry Smith, Chief Clinical Officer, is hopeful and excited for the growth of Phoenix Rising. “I certainly see Phoenix Rising continuing its phenomenal growth at our current location in Canton where we’re averaging 200 new clients per month. Our Alliance office has only been in existence for 3 months and has already witnessed significant growth as well.” Terry explains. “As an organization, we are continually assessing the needs within our community and will seek to grow accordingly.”
