The disability process can be long and frustrating.
At the initial stage, a Social Security Disability claim takes an average of three months to process.
The reconsideration stage could take another two months to process.
Finally, the wait for a hearing date to get in front of a judge could take more than two years.
It’s no wonder that one of the most common questions we get asked is, “How can I make my disability case go faster?”
In some cases, there’s not much you can do to speed up the process. However, there are scenarios in which you can provide specific documents or proof that will allow the Social Security Administration (SSA) to speed up your case.
You may be able to speed up your disability case if:
- You are a Disabled Veteran
- You can Provide Legal Foreclosure or Eviction Notice
- You can Provide Documents Showing Essential Utility Shutoff
- You have a Terminal Condition
Transcript: One question that we get very often from our clients is, “how can I make my case go faster?” In many circumstances, unfortunately, there’s not a whole lot that can be done to make a disability case go faster, but in some circumstances that are certain things that you can flag for social security disability that can speed up what’s normally a very slow process and remember, an average disability case if it has to go before an administrative law judge, which is where many cases go, can take up to two years, actually it can take longer than two years, but here’s some things that you can do to possibly make your case go faster. First of all, if you’re a disabled veteran, in particular, if you have a service-connected disability and even in more particular, if you are rated with having a hundred percent service connection disability make sure you let social security know that. That’s one way that social security might flag your file and hopefully speed things up for you. Another way to make your case go faster is if you can provide the social security and these legal documents but illegal foreclosure notice or illegal eviction notice showing that you’re about to be homeless so, you’re gonna lose your home. Another way that you can speed up your case is if you can provide an essential utility shut off, okay? So, I’m not talking about your cable bill or your internet bill, but if you’re about to lose your electricity or your water or your gas, things that you need in order to be safe, you know, in your living circumstances, those are things that you can provide to social security that may help move the case along. And lastly, if you have a condition that becomes terminal so you know a condition that is expected to result in death, definitely let social security know about that because that’s another way that your case may be pushed ahead of the pile and expedited. There are things that can be done to make a case go faster. Many cases can’t be, but some situation can be.
