Springing Forward: A Salmon Wild Rice Salad for Reclaiming Routine on Your Disability Journey
By Debra Shifrin aka “Nana” | Nana’s Nuggets – March Edition
Hi Everyone!
March is that magical time when everything starts to shift. We spring forward, open the windows, and just maybe, feel a little more motivated to reset the routines winter took from us.
If you’re like many of my clients, the cold months can hit especially hard when you’re living with a disability. Pain gets worse, movement gets harder, and motivation sometimes disappears altogether.
That’s okay. This month is about starting small and moving forward.
This month on Nana’s Nuggets, I’m sharing one of my favorite light-but-satisfying recipes: a Salmon Wild Rice Salad. It’s fresh, packed with nutrients, and just like spring; it’s about balance, brightness, and rebuilding.
The Recipe: Salmon + Wild Rice Spring Salad
This salad is protein-packed, full of color, and can be served warm or cold. It’s perfect for meal prepping or enjoying out on the porch with some sun on your face.
Ingredients:
- 1 salmon fillet cooked, cooled, and shredded (or canned salmon in water)
- 1 box wild rice blend cooked and cooled
- 1 can of corn, drained
- Fresh parsley
- A splash of balsamic vinegar
Instructions:
- Bake or pan-sear the salmon and then flake.
- Cook the wild rice blend per instructions.
- In a large bowl, combine wild rice, corn, and parsley.
- Flake the salmon on top and toss gently.
- Drizzle with balsamic vinegar. Serve warm or chilled.
Nana’s Tip: Want a boost of healthy fat? Add a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt or tahini dressing!
Springing Forward—Even When Life Feels Stuck
March is full of transition. The clocks change. The weather shifts. Birds return. And yet, for many people applying for disability benefits, life still feels stuck.
Maybe you’re waiting for a decision from Social Security.
Maybe you’re too exhausted to even think about your health.
Maybe you’re overwhelmed by paperwork, doctor visits, and endless delays.
I see it every day and I want you to know:
“You don’t need to do a full spring cleaning on your life. You just need to take one step forward.”
That might be:
- Choosing a nourishing meal instead of skipping another lunch
- Going for a short walk/stroll or opening the window
- Writing down how you really feel to tell your doctor
- Asking for help even if it feels uncomfortable
That’s how we move forward. One forkful. One conversation. One moment at a time.

Final Thoughts from Nana
You don’t have to bloom all at once.
You don’t need a perfect plan.
You just need to start.
Eat something nourishing.
Ask for support.
Speak your truth at that next appointment.
And remember, you are not behind. You are becoming.
And if you ever need a cheerleader?
You’ve got me, Nana, in your corner.
With love (and delicious recipes),
Debbie Shifrin (Nana)
