How to Apply for Social Security Disability, Step by Step

Step 1: Gather Your Documents

Before you apply, collect your Social Security number, proof of age, W-2s or self-employment tax returns, and the names, addresses, phone numbers, and dates of treatment for every doctor, hospital, and clinic that has treated your condition — plus a list of your medications and any test results.

Step 2: File Your Application

You can apply for SSDI online at ssa.gov, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or in person at your local Social Security office (SSI usually requires a phone or in-person interview). Applying as soon as your condition stops you from working helps protect your potential back pay.

Step 3: The DDS Medical Review

Your claim goes to your state’s Disability Determination Services (DDS), where an examiner and a medical consultant compare your records to Social Security’s rules. This first decision usually takes about 3 to 6 months.

Step 4: If You’re Denied, Appeal

Most initial claims are denied, so a denial is not the end of the road. You have 60 days to request reconsideration, and then to request a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge — the stage where having a disability lawyer makes the biggest difference.
