Two Egg Rolls, Two Programs: Understanding the Difference Between SSD and SSI
Hi friends,
Welcome back to my kitchen. I’m Debra Shifrin, disability lawyer, grandmother of four, and your guide for all things nourishing and empowering. This month on Nana’s Nuggets, I’m bringing something special to the table: spinach and ground turkey egg rolls, a light and healthy twist just in time for Thanksgiving.
But while we’re rolling up these savory little bundles, I want to talk to you about another set of “fillings” that many people get confused about: the difference between Social Security Disability (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
The Recipe: Spinach-Turkey Egg Rolls
These egg rolls are warm, healthy, and packed with flavor; perfect for a cozy fall lunch or as an appetizer for your Thanksgiving spread.
Ingredients:
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 lb ground turkey
- 2 cups fresh spinach
- 2 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
- 1 tsp sesame oil (optional, for flavor)
- 1 package egg roll wrappers
- Oil for frying or cooking spray if baking
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant.
- Add ground turkey and cook until browned, breaking into crumbles.
- Stir in spinach and cook until wilted. Add soy sauce and sesame oil. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Place an egg roll wrapper on a flat surface. Spoon 2–3 tablespoons of filling in the center.
- Fold sides over filling and roll tightly.
- Spray the egg rolls with cooking spray and then bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15–20 minutes, turning halfway through.
- Serve hot with dipping sauce (sweet chili or soy sauce).
Nana’s Tip: Egg rolls have different fillings, just like SSD and SSI have different rules. Both are delicious in their own way, but you need to know which one you’re biting into!
What’s the Difference Between SSD and SSI?
Now, while we roll up these little beauties, let’s unpack one of the most common questions I get as a Social Security Disability lawyer:
What’s the difference between SSD and SSI? Aren’t they the same thing?
The short answer? No, and knowing the difference can make a huge impact on your case.
SSD – Social Security Disability Insurance
- Based on your work history and the credits you’ve earned
- You must have paid into the system through payroll taxes
- Comes with Medicare eligibility
- No strict limit on resources or assets
SSI – Supplemental Security Income
- For people with very limited income and resources
- Not tied to work history—you don’t need to have worked
- Comes with Medicaid eligibility
- Has strict financial limits (including assets and household income)
It’s like these egg rolls: same wrapping, different fillings. From the outside, SSD and SSI might look similar but the qualifications and benefits inside are very different.
And just like you don’t want to bite into tofu when you were expecting turkey, you want to make sure you’re applying for the right program for your situation.
Why This Matters for Your Disability Application
Choosing the wrong program or not understanding which one you qualify for can delay your case or even lead to a denial.
That’s why at Liner Legal, we make it our mission to educate and empower you, not just represent you.
Whether you’ve worked your whole life or never had the chance to, there’s no shame, just different rules. And we’re here to help you figure out exactly where you fit.
