From My Kitchen to Yours: Why I Created Nana’s Nuggets
By Debra Shifrin, a.k.a. Nana | Disability Attorney, Health Advocate & Proud Grandma
Hi Everyone! I’m Debra Shifrin, but you can call me Nana.
I am a Social Security Disability lawyer. I am also a mother of two and a grandmother of four. And now, the heart behind something I’ve been dreaming of for a long time – Nana’s Nuggets.
If you have worked with me or Liner Legal, you know we fight tooth and nail. Our goal is to help people get their Social Security Disability or Long-Term Disability benefits.
I have spent over 40 years helping people get the benefits they need. But through it all, I’ve learned something important:
Winning your disability case is only one part of the journey. Helping you feel seen, supported, and healthy while you wait, well, that is just as important.
Why I Launched Nana’s Nuggets: Comfort and Care Meets Disability Help
Nana’s Nuggets is more than a disability support blog or video series. It’s a monthly message that offers support and practical help during a stressful and emotional time.
Every month, you’ll receive:
- A simple, healthy recipe from my own kitchen
- A bite-sized legal "nugget" to help you understand the Social Security Disability and Long-Term Disability process
- A reminder that you are not alone in this process
This idea came from a place of empathy, not just as a social security disability attorney, but as someone living with diabetes and who, like many of our clients, has struggled with health challenges over the years. I understand how tough this journey can be.
That’s why I’m combining food, legal guidance, and emotional support to make your road a little easier.
Disability and Obesity: The Overlooked Connection
Did you know that more than 40% of people with disabilities also experience obesity? And that isn’t a coincidence:
- Staying active when you're in pain is harder.
- Medications can make weight loss feel impossible.
- Depression and isolation often contribute to emotional eating.
And when you’re also trying to apply for social security disability or long-term disability benefits, it can feel like the world is stacked against you.
That’s why Nana’s Nuggets was born, not just to help you apply for benefits, but to walk with you through the harder stuff in between: the waiting, the self-doubt, the days you don’t feel like yourself.
What to Expect from Nana’s Nuggets
In every Nana’s Nuggets video or blog post, I invite you into my kitchen, no judgement, no fancy tools required, just:
- Easy-to-make meals that nourish your body
- Disability claim advice made simple and digestible
- Tips to boost confidence and reduce stress during the disability application process
From my favorite veggie soup recipes to important legal red flags to avoid, every episode is crafted with love, empathy, and a deep understanding of what you’re going through.
You are worth taking care of while we take care of your case.

You matter. You’re not invisible. You deserve support.
